Print Competition Results and Latest Happenings

I attended the annual New Hampshire Professional Photographer's Association(NHPPA) conference and state print competition. Always fun and filled with educational classes to continue to grow my skills. And the results are in... Turns out I entered three prints in competition and if you look at my previous blog when I was deciding what to enter, a couple of these are different versions. I am proud to announce that I received a blue ribbon (deserving of merit category) for the spiral staircase, and a red ribbon (above average professional) for the other two images. Always a great learning experience!

I am also proud to announce that I was sworn in as NHPPA's 1st Vice President. My current term as 2nd Vice President will finish the end of May and this 1st VP role starts the first of June! It comes with the task of finding a winter seminar speaker for winter 2012, and finding a great line up of conference speakers for next year's conference. I'll be busy, but it will be a fun journey!

LATEST HAPPENINGS!

What a treat to do a high school senior session in the winter! Typically they are all done by fall due to the school deadlines. This was fun and we even went out in the snow at her suggestion to take photos by a rock wall in their yard! Not only did we have a fun session doing her senior portraits, but the whole family got involved with a family portrait!

LOCAL BASKETBALL LEAGUE

I photographed the local basketball league this winter. What fun! Always good to see all the kids and get them to smile. The ones I know real well I don't cut any slack because I know what great smiles they're capable of! It was even more of a thrill because in between photographing the teams, I got to watch all the games. Our teams worked hard all season and looked great out there on the court! Kudos to the coaches for all the guidance and skills they gave these kids!

Print Competition Time

The state print competition at the annual convention is right around the corner! The convention is one month earlier so everything has to be ready to go asap! I'm excited to be considering entering portraits this year. In years past, I've stuck to my favorite landscape and nature images. We'll see what the judges think of them! If anyone has any feedback on names for the images, I'm all ears! A name can make or break a print and has to assist with the "story" in the image. The judges will hear the name first and then seconds later see the image, so it has to have impact and make sense when they get the visual. Here are this year's candidates.

Busy Summer Sessions

I can't believe the new school year is already upon us! My kids start on August 30th. The weather this summer has certainly been accomodating, at least for the activities we had scheduled. I'm a fan of hot, summer weather, so I have no complaints at all! Love when you can walk outside and have no temperature jolt from indoors, and when you can be outside by a campfire and the air is still warm enough to be in a sleeveless shirt!!

Specializing in outdoor, on location sessions can be a challenge, but not this summer! It was the busiest season thus far! I've had the pleasure of photographing family portraits, engagement sessions, high school seniors and am getting ready for several upcoming weddings this fall! Here are some of my favorite pix of the summer.

This is actually my hair stylist and her family! If you visit her salon, you'll see this portrait on display. See the links page of my website to view her Signature Style Salon website! If you mention this portrait and hold a session, you can receive a $25 gift certificate to the salon!

This family wanted a portrait taken to give to their Grandmother for her 80th birthday! I'm told she was quite thrilled when she saw it!! This was one of my favorites from the session.

Part of what I enjoy about being a photographer and doing these sessions and weddings is getting to know the people. It's fun to see families and couples interact, have fun, and be able to help them capture this time in their lives in portrait keepsakes.

And High School Seniors are always fun! We were having so much fun on this session, we spent 3 hours walking around the City! Not all sessions are that long, but this was very fun and she's such a great young lady.

I also fulfilled my first responsibility as 2nd Vice President for the Professional Photographer's Association, a role I officially entered this past June, having coordinated/chaired the Association's annual Summer Seminar. Elizabeth and Trey Homan were the guest speakers and had a lot to offer those in attendance including a live demonstration with a Mom with triplets! The topic of the day was ...from maternity, to children and beyond.

My Son's First Communion

I must share a happy event that happened in our family this month. My youngest son received his First Communion. We're so proud of him for this accomplishment, not only for his respect for the event, but also for proudly wearing such a handsome outfit! Congratulations!

Print Competition Results and Entering the Executive Board!

Another NHPPA annual conference draws to a close. Always a great time. As you can see from the images below, they're a crazy, fun bunch. Each banquet has a costume theme and this year's was "Howling Nights". It was intended to be "your scariest costume". Not sure I was a scary as I could be, but with the help of a friend's hand-made red cloak, I went as a vampiress. We had a great time!

In my last post, you'll see the four images I entered in the state print competition. The judges were tough, holding us all to the list of 12 criteria items that make an exceptional print. This year, all four of my images were judged in the "above average professional" category - receiving red ribbons. Overall, there were far more red ribbons than the sought after blue which puts you in the "deserving of merit" category and is a step above a red ribbon; in fact they ran out of red ribbons there were so many! Although it is blue that we strive for, being scored "above average professional" is an honor in itself! Now is time to move forward and plan next year's entries! Such a wonderful learning experience!

Lastly, as is customary at the conference banquet, the year comes to a close for the existing board of directors and the new slate is sworn in. I am excited to now officially be a part of the executive board as the organization's 2nd Vice President. This is an automatic rotating position which means in two years I will become the president. I am looking forward to this journey and proud to be part of this wonderful organization!

Print Competition Time Again!

This year I played with a macro lens and had fun photographing flowers. The result? Three prints for competition this year of flowers! In state competitions, flowers tend to be very popular, and therefore tough to score high. We'll see how these fair! Then I'll be "throwing in" a fall scene from the mountains. Hopefully this will do well?! The limit is five prints and here I have four. Time is running out, but it would be great to put in five! Realistically, it may just stay at four, though.

Flowers and Herbs - Close Up!

Well, if you look at the last few images from my previous blog entry, I took some flower images after a portrait shoot. I took those images with a very long lens - not one that was condusive of close-ups. So I was itchin' to get closer!! With the help of a 60mm macro lens, I went to this beautiful herb garden and had some fun in the rain! The water droplets added an extra element of beauty to the flowers. Oh what fun...

Not sure what this was. Although a lot of the flowers and herbs were labelled, this was not. I loved how the rain drops outlined the edges of the leaves.

There were several areas where the stalks were braided - interesting.

Had some fun with these Foxglove stalks.

There's a beautiful dirt road lined with lavender and various flowering herbs that I had to capture.

NH PPA Annual Conference - What a Blast!

What a great New Hampshire Professional Photography (NH PPA) conference! Inspirational speakers, another intense state print competition and being surrounded by friends!! It was more of a challenge to come away with a blue ribbon in this year's competition from this panel of judges. I was very fortunate that both of the images I submitted were honored with a score of 80 which puts them in the "deserving of merit" category and earns them the sought after blue ribbon. Achieving a blue ribbon gives the photographer a merit towards industry degrees.

A fellow photographer was kind enough to take this photo of me in front of my two blue ribbon images!

After agonizing over the title of the Red Sox seat image, one of the judges actually praised it in a panel discussion as supporting the "story telling" of the image. The title was "If These Historic Seats Could Talk". The panel of glass with the one yellow tile is "Inner Glow".

The banquet at the conference has a theme each year. In honor of this being the 50th annual conference, the theme was appropriately dubbed the 50's. Everyone broke out their poodle skirts, saddle shoes, white t-shirts and rolled up jeans. I chose a "soda pop girl" costume - complete with roller skates! Yes, for those of you who knew I was a bit nervous after all these years to put them on again, I did and after a little practice was right back to skating backwards on the dance floor and doing spins! I didn't want to take them off!

With much pride and honor, I accepted my Associate Colleague of Photography medal (you can see it hanging around my neck in the above image). This is given after a professional photographer achieves 25 degree merits and gives recognition to members for their service to and on behalf of the NH PPA and for those who excel in print competition (for each blue ribbon print). In the four years that I have been a member of NH PPA, it has been a pleasure to give back to the organization in the way of service in several roles - including my current role as Director and Scholarship Chairman over the last two years. And I am grateful for the fellow members and mentors who encouraged me to continue to enter prints in the state competition! It is because of these peers that I have accomplished this achievement!

And I was not the only one daring enough to put on skates!!

Here's my boy, but I did not take this image!! My good friend and fellow roller skater shown above took this and earned her first blue ribbon print!! Way to go!!!

Never Stop Learning!

"One of the things that may get in the way of people being lifelong learners is that they’re not in touch with their passion. If you’re passionate about what it is you do, then you’re going to be looking for everything you can to get better at it." - Jack Canfield

I just returned from a week-long course study in Lifestyle Portraiture at the New England Institute of Professional Photography (NEIPP) and this quote above sums up why it is so vital to never stop learning! There is no doubt in my mind that photography is my passion and I yearn to continue to develop a style of soft, gentle, natural, elegant images for my clients.

This is the third year I have attended this school. Each year there are close to a dozen instructors offering a variety of topics. I remember a conversation I had with the Executive Director of the school who said "the instructors that teach at NEIPP do not earn their wings here, they're already in flight". This year I chose to study with world renoun photographer, Elizabeth Homan. Her photographic style is beautiful and she is genuinely caring to her clients as well as her students. She gave us a wealth of information and taught us lots of creative techniques to create more elegant and refined posing in our own work. The week is very intense but very exciting and uplifting. There is something special about being surrounded by others who share your passion!

The images that follow are some of my favorites that I had taken during the demonstration sessions we had throughout the week. I am so very excited for my own clients to reap the benefits of all the ideas and techniques I have come away with from this wondeful class!

Children's Portraits

These images are from a photo shoot just the other day. I love the feel of a warm tone backdrop with portraits. This little girl is the cutest little peanut! Both kids had lots of posing ideas and had some fun with it, which is the most important part of a photography session for kids!

NH PPA 2009 Print Competition Preparation

The annual print competition held at the New Hampshire Professional Photographer's Association is coming up quick - the end of April to be exact. Each print in competition is judged based on a list of 12 criteria as opposed to photo contest where you're up against other prints. The goal is to get a score of at least an 80 which gives you a blue ribbon and a merit towards a degree within the industry. It is a very intense, emotional and exciting event. This year, I have two prints prepared so far.

This image was taken during a tour of Fenway Park and is of the original and historic seating section. For competition I've named it "If These Historic Seats Could Talk".

This was fun to take. It was a huge glass tile wall at a hotel lobby. I'm calling it "Inner Glow".

These bottom two images were considerations, but after getting opinions from some certified judges and highly respected industry photographers, they didn't make the cut.

This is a building in Boston we saw while walking the Freedom Trail.

I took this image while at the New England Institute of Photography down in Dennis, MA. It was along the walkway that brought you to the ocean's edge at a resort where the classes were held and appropriately named, the Ocean's Edge Resort"!

Love Using Window Light!

These images are from a recent session where I was using some beautiful window light from a large mill building window. I just love the soft quality that comes from window lighting and also the texture of the bricks!

Wedding with Detail!

It is a lot of fun seeing all the different weddings and the individual details that go into making each unique. This particular wedding was LOADED with flowers and crystals; bouquets at the bride's house, in the private wedding party room, and not only in the reception hall, but on every surface in the lobby area! All seats had white covers with big beautiful fushia bows, the cake table and personal bride and groom's table had ivy and crystals and more flowers. And the bridesmaid dresses were the most elegantly detailed I've seen. It was beautiful!

One of the nice things I like about portrait photography is that I get to meet lots of different people with different personalities. It's fun getting to know them. I had the pleasure of photographing this high school senior at one of her favorite spots near a river. We had a nice walk and she is such a pleasant and quietly confident young woman.

This was a recent high school senior portrait I had the pleasure of photographing. It was lots of fun. She has the most beautiful smile that seemed to come so naturally every time I lifted the camera! I make every effort to try and capture my subject in a very natural way, not stiff and posed. Each person's session can be quite different from another depending on their personalities which his why I enjoy photographing on location. That way each person's images are unique to them.

I had the pleasure of being a part of a wonderful wedding in the Lakes Region of New Hampshire on Memorial Day weekend. These folks knew how to have a fun time. The bride and groom were very sweet. It is such a joy to be able to help them capture the memories of their special day. Here are some highlights.

You never know what will happen when it comes to cutting the cake! I must say that although the bride had some fun with this, it was done very tastefully!

NH PPA Conference Excitement

The month of April has been quite busy with photographic events, and loads of fun! I just returned from the New Hampshire Professional Photographer's Association (NHPPA) 49th Annual Conference and got to experience such notable speakers as Fuzzy Duenkel and Mike Fulton. Both have amazing talent and offered lots of education! I entered two prints in the print competition. The goal is to get a blue ribbon, which in numerical scoring is an 80 or above. A "blue" is considered "deserving of merit" and is recognized in the industry with a degree credit. This category is above a red ribbon, which is the "above average professional" category to give you an idea of the weight it carries. I am proud to share that both prints scored in the blue ribbon category!

"Autumn Serenity" scored an 86!

"Gentle Cascades" scored an 84!

In addition to the fun of seminars and competition, I was proud to be sworn in to my 3 year Director term for the organization. I also serve as Scholarship Chairperson. This organization has offered so much to me that it is my pleasure to serve in these positions as my way of giving back!

NE Institute of Professional Photography Week!

I had the good fortune to win a full scholarship to attend the 47th annal session of NEIPP, the New England Institute of Professional Photography. This is a week long, intensive course study. I chose to study with Master Photographer, Don MacGregor from Vancouver, British Columbia in his Lifestyle Portraiture class. The week was amazing! A wonderful class teaching the art of environmental and natural light portraiture. I was in heaven! I am so very excited to implement the techniques I learned to create beautiful family, child and wedding portraits for my clients.

The school was held at the Ocean Edge Resort in Brewster, MA. Above is the main mansion where my class was held.

Here is a view of the main mansion to the left and the carriage house building to the right where I took a mini sample class on Tuesday night with Stuart and Susan Powers whose class taught advanced children's portraiture.

This was the view of the ocean from the door of our class room! The white tent that you can see is where we gathered for our meals, orientation and banquet.

This is the villa I shared with 4 other NH Professional Photographer Association members who were also attending. One afternoon, we saw a red fox go trotting by the driveway in front!

And this was the walk we faced every day to get up to the main mansion for class. Helped worked the calories off that's for sure!

This was an interesting tree out in front of the mansion. Our class was setting up a group posing exercise in front of this tree and all of a sudden you could hear the call of a red tail hawk. We turned to see one heading right towards us only about 10 feet over head! Incredible!

The landscaping was interesting, including this nice "s" curve wall at the front door.

This old tower was in the middle of some of the villas on the property.

There was a quaint foot bridge about 1000 ft. from our villa that lead you down to the ocean's edge (hense the name of the resort!).

I spotted these neat trees off to the side of the ocean path.

On Wednesday evening, as is tradition at NEIPP, the brave gather for the Polar Bear Plunge! It was about 45 brisk degrees. The guy to the left was inspiring the polar bears with his tribal drumming.

And there they go!

And just as quickly, here they come. Hysterically, the guy with the drum slowed his drumming down as the plunge drew to a close.

We spent Monday morning partaking in outdoor, natural light portraiture with this model.

This was our second model on Monday, and we were once again practicing natural light portaiture.

This was a family session where we were learning about posing a group. Despite the short sleeves, it was mighty cold! Those boys would leap for their jackets in between images!

We took the family down for a beach shot. It was very windy there, so Mr. MacGregor was kind to let them leave their coats on.

On Thursday, we went to a local church in Brewster to photograph a bride model. This was lit with all window light.

Isn't this beautiful?! Once again, all window light!

I couldn't resist getting some architectural-type images. The pews were very cool!

I went out on the beach with a couple other photographers to play with some images. This was taken with a fish eye lens. They sky had turned fuscia with what looked like rays shooting upward for about 2 minutes and then it was gone!

And here are all the room mates as we were dressed and ready for the "black tie preferred" banquet which was also honoring "The Great Gatsby". We had fun dressing up.

What an experience! This NEIPP school is known for their caliber of instructors. I am so very grateful that I was able to attend! It is always such a rush of excitement and emotion when one is in their element!
